Above you will see two new "pages" on my website: Daily Digital Assignments and Digital Learning Resources.  Here is where you can find the daily email being sent out, logon information, online books, as well as SPECIALS activities to do at home.  I will update that as needed.

Digital Learning Email 3/23

Hi there families!! I hope all are doing well. I truly have thought about each and everyone of my kiddos this past week. I know we are in a weird situation right now, but I want to assure you that I am here for you and your students. The email below is the one that was crafted by the 5th grade team that lets you know that we will begin lessons tomorrow. Please be sure to read the emails coming from Jenny Brown and/or Gold Rush, as they have a ton of information in them.

Along with planning today, I will be adding information to my blog for your reference. You will see a daily email from me with assignments that will also be posted on my blog and can most of the time be found in your student's various Google Classrooms.

Please feel free to email me if you have any questions. Also, please convey to your kids that I truly miss them and am here to answer their questions as well.

As per our email right before the break, we wanted to reach out and let you know that learning opportunities will begin on Tuesday, March 24 instead of the originally planned Monday, March 23rd (today). At this time, we are working on plans for learning opportunities and what it will look like for your child. Please look for an email from your child’s teacher beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, March 24 by 9:00 am.

Spring Break

Greetings!

We just wanted to communicate to you before Spring Break what expectations will look like
going forward.  Beginning Monday, March 23, I will begin sending a daily email, as well as posting
on my blog, the assignments to do each day.  Students will be able to access all assignments
through their Google Classroom(s) which they are familiar with and have used often in our
classrooms.

Valentine's Day

We will celebrate with our party this Thursday (as there is no school for students on Friday).  Our party will be after lunch from 1:45-2:45.  Students are encouraged to bring in Valentines to their classmates.  I have sent a list home with them today.  We will also be having an optional box decorating contest.  Students are not at all required to bring in a fancy box, but those who choose to, can enter our contest.  If your kiddo doesn't want to decorate a box, please at least have them bring in something to hold their Valentines

Wish Week

Here is a message from student council:

Spirit Week will begin Tuesday February 18th.  Students are encouraged to bring change or a few dollars each day.  The class to collect the most money during Wish Week will earn a pizza party, so have fun and get competitive!

Field Trip

We are all set to head to the Museum of Nature and Science on March 6th.  Students will connect with their science learning of the body systems and participate in the Lung Lab where they will get to dissect a lamb's lung.  This is a great experience that kids seem to love year after year.  Please sign up here on MySchool Bucks.  Also, I am looking for 5 parent chaperones to accompany us!!  Please let me know if you are interested by this Thursday.  If I get more volunteers than the 5 we need, I will randomly pull names out of a hat.

Conferences

Spring Conferences are coming up on March 4th and 12th.  The school sign up will come out later this week, but I have included a sign up here for additional times if they may work better for you.

January Update

Here's what's happening in our classroom:

Reading
We are in the process of completing our Argument and Advocacy Unit where students took some time to research a "hot topic."  These span from "Should we allow people to climb Mt. Everest?" to "Banning the use of plastic bags."  Ask your kiddo what they have been researching and where they stand on the issue.  They should be able to give you their claim followed with some strong research-based reasons.  With this unit we have focused quite a bit on critical thinking and reasoning.  They are doing great!

Writing
Our writing unit goes hand in hand with our reading unit, but the topic is a bit more controlled.  Students are taking sides on the question of "Should chocolate milk be available in school lunch rooms?"  Currently it's a pretty split class which is great to see.  Students have read articles on both sides to support their claim.  We have also spent a lot of time talking about adding thinking and "unpacking" the evidence to fully get your point across.  Other focuses have been: transitions, adding craft, looking at perspective, and using sources.

Math
We have dived head first into fractions and they are doing great!!  The past few weeks have focused on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators as well as adding and subtracting mixed numbers.  There are so many things to keep in mind when dealing with fractions that often times kids get confused as to "what to do."  I'm a strong believer in teaching great mathematical thinking and understanding the why and number sense behind the math.  I think this is really helping these kiddos grasp the concepts.

Science
Our class is in our last unit that focuses on causes and consequences of weather.  This includes uneven heating of the earth, pressure, weather maps, and evaporation of water.  Along with this we have done a great technology unit where we looked at historical weather trends in different parts of the country and analyzed how this affects the area and climate.

Transition to MS

I know many of you have already attended some of the Coffee Talks at Cimarron Middle School recently.  If you haven't yet, there will be another one on February 26th.  This is a great opportunity for you to get to know the middle school and ask all the questions you may have. 

This week I sent home the electives form, which I thoroughly went over with the class.  I feel like they have a solid understanding of their choices, but if you need any other clarification I will happily answer any questions. 

Later in the year (May 11th) we will bring all the 5th graders up to Cimarron for a welcome and tour to help them feel more comfortable.

Being a parent sending a kid off to middle school myself, I am feeling many of the same feelings you are feeling.  Please know that I am always an email/phone call away.

December Happenings

Reading
We are finishing up our unit on Nonfiction Text Complexity by becoming experts on a topic of their choice.  Not only will kids gain deep knowledge on a subject, but we will be focusing on how texts on the same topics vary.  They may have different text structures, author biases, perspectives, and present information in very different ways.  Because of this, I am asking kids to gather resources.  We have books from our classroom that they are currently using, we have visited the Gold Rush Library, and I have printed a few articles for them.  Please also help them gather text by printing articles at home and visiting the public library.

Writing
We are finishing up our Literary Essay Unit.  Kids are in the process of finishing their second piece and will do one last one on a text of their choice.  We have focused, not only on essay structure and tone, but have also really gotten into finding just the right evidence to support our thesis statements and then "unpacking" that evidence to show how it supports our thinking.

Math
Division is our next topic.  We begin with whole number division then move into decimal division.  Through this work we will be making estimates to check the reasonableness of our answers, dividing by one-digit divisors, and by two-digit divisors.  I will teach both Partial Quotients and the Traditional Method of division and either option is fine with me.  Typically students find it easier to use traditional with one-digit divisors and partial quotients with two-digit.  The most important aspect at the end is that they have a solid understanding of division, are accurate, and are efficient.

Holiday Items
As a "gift" to the class, I will have an in-class Read-a-thon on Thursday the 18th.  On this day kids can bring in a small blanket or beach towel to get cozy with, I will provide hot chocolate, and we will spend the day enjoying books!  We will read fiction, nonfiction, science material, magazines, etc.

November Happenings

Just a quick update for our month!

Reading
We've begun our nonfiction unit of study where kids delve into this genre by reading books of their choice.  To raise the level of reading skills in this area, we focus quite a bit on how the text gets more and more complex.  We've reviewed text structures, main ideas and supporting details.  Next will be how many text have overlapping text structures as well as implicit main ideas.  Vocabulary development, domain specific words, and using morphology will also be a big focus.  This will lead to great summaries and hopefully a love of learning from nonfiction. 

Writing
After reviewing a basic essay structure, we have combined fictional reading and writing to learn about the Literary Essay.  This will solidify the structure of most essays that students will write for years to come, while also reinforcing those great reading skills we learned in September and October of theme, character motivation, and symbolism.

Math
After completing our unit on whole number multiplication, we are ready for multiplication of decimals.  We begin by looking at place value, powers of 10, and a visual model.  Students will be reasoning through many complicated word problems by the end of this unit.

Science
In our Body Systems Unit we are now looking at our digestive system.  With each new system we learn the purpose, function of each part, how they work together, the level of interdependency on the whole system, and how the system as a whole helps fulfill a basic life process.  We are also understanding when illness or problems occur and how to keep our bodies healthy.

Later this month we will have our Celebration of Learning where kids show off what they have learned.  This will be the 30 minutes prior to our Thanksgiving Family Feast!

This past week's emails

Just a reminder that our school fun-run, the Digger Dash, is this coming Friday, September 27th!!  Our team name is the Mrs. Hagerty's Hungry Hippos!  To get into the team spirt, it would be awesome if everyone could wear a grey shirt.  Mrs. Hatton and Mrs. Bliesmer have graciously put time and effort into making our class banner and are going to get the kids grey hats.  If you would like to make a $2 donation to off set the cost of the materials, that would be appreciated.  I'm happy to collect that any day this week.

Geography Unit

Traditionally, fifth grade geography is centered around the U.S. states and regions.  The regions we are studying are: Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest, and the West.  We've had discussions on how different geographers split up the regions differently, but we've decided to stick with these.  We look for defining characteristics of the ares through the concepts of climate, landforms, natural resources, industry, agriculture, and culture.  We also look at population density, reasons for this, and why people migrate to particular areas.

To get students more engaged, this year we, have decided to tie this unit to the sport of the season: football.  Students began by studying NFL teams across the nation: locating them, looking at why they're located in particular places, population, why they have their given mascot.  In the end, students will work in collaborative groups to present a proposal for a new NFL team to the commissioner (me!).  They will be assessed on the concepts, the presentation, the thoughtfulness of their proposed team, and how they collaborated.  Below is the rubric I will be using to score.

Hello, Gold Rush Parents! We are currently doing...

Math: In math we have been working on our decimals trying to

figure out if one is greater, less than or equal to. We have also been

working on, listing decimals in order from biggest to smallest.

Writing: In writing we have been working on making our own small

moment stories. Where we take a small moment that has happened to

us and write about it like it was an actual story we are writing, but

about ourselves.

Geography: In geography we have been learning all the 5 parts of

the United States, West, Southwest Midwest and etc.. We have also

been learning how all the parts of the United States act like their culture.

Reading: In reading we have been taking notes in our books and

taking notes about our characters and storyline. We have also been

working on setting goals and pushing ourselves to those goals and accomplishing them.

Other: This month we have the Digger Dash! The Digger Dash is

on September 27th. We are also doing student council this month.

Hello Gold Rush Parents!

Reading: In reading we have been talking about Round and Flat characters, also known as

static and dynamic. We also looked at basic plot structure for a book.  Finally, we discovered

the four types of conflict for the characters: characters vs. character, vs. self, vs. nature, vs.

society.

Writing: In writing we have been talking about mentor texts, and we have been writing our

own 10 Questions page based on these mentors. We also have been reading and analyzing

some articles about teamwork. 

Geography: We have also been talking and learning about geography. We have been

learning about the 5 meanings geography can have including Place, Location,

Human\Environment Interactions, and Movement.

Math: In math we have been working on powers of ten and learning our strategies for

solving the exponents problems. We also have been working on finding patterns with

the exponents multiplying problems and multiplying the problems in the right way.  

Back to School Night

What's going on in August?

We've spent the last few days getting back into school.  This includes getting to know each other, getting to know Mrs. Hagerty, and getting to know what 5th grade is going to be like.  I've really tried to ease kids back into the swing of things.  Here's and idea of what we've done so far:

In MATH we have spent some time looking at math as an exploratory subject.  Realizing that with math there are patterns and that numbers can be build and/or broken down in many ways.  I have tried to stress to the students my philosophy of attempting new problems in a variety of ways, as they all know something about math as new problems are presented.

In WRITING they shared a bit about them through the use of a video application called Animoto.  They will also take a PreAssessment for me to see where they are in the area of writing.

In READING we've been reviewing concepts about how stories are written.  This has included characterization, plot, and theme.  This will all prepare them for our first unit that focuses on interpreting theme from realistic fiction novels.  We have also just spent time getting back into the love of reading, exploring our classroom library, and thinking about "just right books."

I am looking forward to seeing each one of your students grow this year!  We truly have a great class filled with sweet, hard-working kids.  I am excited to continue to get to know them.

Meet Mrs. Hagerty

Dear Families,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year!  I am so excited to be back and to get to know all of these new kiddos and families.  Fifth grade is going to be an amazing year full of learning, growth, partnerships, new experiences, and fun.  We have some great learning experiences to look forward to, which include a dissection, pushing ourselves in our writing abilities, growing as mathematicians, using technology regularly and purposefully, and a fun-filled day at Outdoor Ed.

A little about myself professionally: I went to college at Cal Poly, and still to this day think it's one of the greatest places on earth.  I studied education there with an emphasis in biology.  I stayed there an additional year to earn my teaching credential.  I then moved down to Valencia, CA where I taught fourth grade.  When I moved to Colorado, I knew that Douglas County was a great fit for me.  This will be my 17th year teaching in total, and my ninth here at Gold Rush Elementary.  I have since received my Masters Degree in education and am still often taking classes on weekends and over the summers.

Personally, I am originally from a small town outside of Santa Barbara and try to get home to visit family at least once a year; not only for the love of family, but to get my fix of the beach.  I have two great children: Gavin who has moved on the 6th grade and Rylah who will be here at Gold Rush in 4th grade.  I also have a wonderful husband and new puppy, Telly.  I love living in this great state because of all there is to do.  I’m often found hiking, going to concerts, dancing, camping, finding fun restaurants, snowboarding, and just being outside in general.

Prepare to see a lot of growth this year in your kiddos both academically and emotionally.  Fifth grade is a year to build character and prepare for the years to come.  I believe in pushing students to find that intrinsic motivation and inner love of learning.  In this class we work hard and have many discussions that help develop critical thinking skills, systems thinking, and global awareness all the while being inquisitive, having fun, and building strong relationships.

Please enjoy these last few days of summer and get ready for a great year!  I look forward to meeting you and forming great relationships.
